TV Gal's Cranky Cup Overfloweth
LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - Now, you know we here at Team TV Gal always try to have a positive attitude. I constantly see the television schedule as half-full. But lately, I've been a little cranky.

Here's why:

  • Enough with the fat Monica story line on "Friends." I will never, ever understand why it is supposed to be innately amusing to stick the ultra-thin Courteney Cox in a fat suit. "Monica used to be enormously overweight" is a plot that exists in a vacuum. We never see the current Monica struggling with her weight, watching what she eats or exercising. The whole thing is offensive. I mean, is it truly funny to watch fat Monica fight to get out of a bean bag chair or jiggle while she dances? It's a story line that I've always found to be beneath "Friends." But, hey, at least the show hasn't been reduced alluding to inappropriate behavior between Ross and Monica. Oh wait ...
  •
  • Lies the networks told us. Talk about networks behaving badly. ABC said they were going to bring back "Karen Sisco" and then reneged on the deal. And I seriously can't take NBC's trigger-happy scheduling any more. I'm on top of these things, and I forgot "Will & Grace" was going to be on Tuesday nights (but only for one more week, and then it's back to Thursday night, or so NBC says). I think the most egregious part is that they literally will advertise a show one night and pull it from the schedule the next. NBC also needs to stop already with its start times of 8:40 and 9:20, especially since I'm convinced that "super size" is merely code word for "more commercials."

  • I'm really starting to worry that they won't vote Richard off "Survivor: All-Stars" the first chance they have. Don't they seem more bemused than annoyed by his antics?

  • FOX's offensive reality show line-up. Last week, FOX announced "Playing It Straight," where a woman will decide between 14 suitors some who are straight, some who are merely pretending to be. If the lucky lady picks a straight guy in the end, they'll split the money. If she picks a gay man, he saunters away with a cool $1 million. In "The Swan," therapist, trainers, cosmetic surgeons, dentist and stylist come together to transform an "ugly duckling" into a "beautiful swan." Eighteen women will compete for the title of "The Ultimate Swan." The description of these shows speaks for themselves. The real problem is that viewers continue to tune in. No matter how mad I am at FOX, even I have to admit that they're giving the people what they want.

Last week, I told you how much I loved the 100th episode of "Angel." Since I didn't want to ruin the big surprise, I refrained from talking about the ending. Now that you've seen the episode, let me share my three concerns:

  • Why get rid of Lindsey so quickly? This was one of the best plot twists/shockers ever. Why wrap it up in three episodes? I'm not crying over Eve's departure, but I would have liked Lindsey and his nefarious plans to stick around for awhile. Let's hope the senior partners let him live. Plus, shouldn't we all have the chance to hear Christian Kane sing again?

  • Why kill off Cordelia? Sure her death packed a dramatic punch, but with the Scooby gang scattered throughout the world, couldn't she have hooked up with Xander in Africa? He probably could have used the company. I'm clinging to the hope that even if you're dead, that doesn't necessarily mean you can't from time to time appear in a Joss Whedon show. Being dead never stopped Darla or Lilah from stopping by.

  • The bigger problem with Cordelia's permanent absence is that the show is seriously in need of a strong female character. Obviously, Eve didn't work out. Harmony is great, but she's really more for comic relief. And Fred is a fine character, but let's all be honest, she's no Cordelia. Last week's episode proved how wonderful the show is when Cordelia (the real Cordy) is around.

What did you think of the 100th episode of "Angel"? What about the television world today is making you cranky? Talk about it on the TV Gal message board.

    Quotes of the Week

"Spike's a hero and you're CEO of Hell Incorporated. What kind of bizzaro world did I wake up in?" Cordelia to Angel on "Angel."

"We want to be the wedding equivalent of 'Cheers,' and right now we're more like 'Coupling.'" Ed to Mike on the series finale of "Ed." I guess the episode was fine, but it really epitomized all that has been wrong with the show all along -- exclusively focusing on Carol and Ed's shenanigans at the expense of everybody else.

"Sorry, all my friends are taken. Wow, I've never said that before." Carrie to The Russian on "Sex and the City."

"I'm pleased to announce the creation of The Robert Romano Center for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Health Care." Dr. Weaver on "ER," announcing how the late Dr. Romano's money will be used.

"I believe the foundation of our friendship was unfortunate hair." Chandler to Ross on "Friends."

"If I was them, I'd stay clear of me. I've got a lot of friends." Rudy after being ousted on "Survivor: All-Stars."

"Any patient of Dr. Brown ... used to be mine." Dr. Abbott on "Everwood."

Where Have I Seen Them Before?

Well just about everybody wrote in to make sure I recognized James Haven as the "vampire" who was the boyfriend of the dead girl on "CSI." Haven is, of course, Angelina Jolie's brother. Now it had to be on purpose that he was wearing a vial of his girlfriend's blood around his neck, right?

Michael Emerson, the oh-so-creepy William Hinks on "The Practice," was the oh-so-creepy professor who brutally murdered a young boy on "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit." Erika Alexander, Maxine on "Living Single" and Dee on "Street Time," was the child advocate from the consulate and Trini Alvarado, who I'll always remember as Meg in the 1994 movie "Little Women," was the professor's naove wife.

Elisa Donovan, Amber in both the "Clueless" movie and TV show and Morgan on "Sabrina, the Teenage Witch," is the hairdresser/singer/potential love interest for Peter on "Judging Amy."

Emily Bergl was Paris' student council rival last season on "Gilmore Girls." She was the woman who shot and killed the man who flirted with her on "CSI: Miami."

Joaquim de Almeida said adios as Ramon Salazar last week on "24," and the next night he was on "The West Wing" romancing C.J. with promises of cabbage.

And I think I might have missed this the first time around. Harry Groener, the mayor/giant snake during season 3 of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," is the persnickety chef on "Las Vegas."

To the TV Gal Reader Belong the Spoils

You know the rules. Don't read if you don't want to know.

I told you last week that we'd see her on "Frasier," and we'll also catch Laurie Metcalf on the 100th episode of "Malcolm in the Middle." She'll play Lois' younger sister Susan. It seems that Susan has never forgiven Hal for dumping her in favor of Lois. Also Susan will be in need of a kidney transplant.

Sara Wynter, the furrowed browed Kate on "24," is joining the cast of "The Dead Zone."

Get ready for another major death on "24."

And we won't have Anna to kick around much longer in "The O.C."

    Question of the Week

In the beginning he was Brian Austin Green. Then he was Brian A. Green. And now he's Brian Green. How long until he goes by the initials B.G.?

    Highlights of the Week Ahead
All times listed are Eastern Standard Time for Feb. 9 to 11

I told you last week how wonderful this episode of "Everwood" (Monday, WB, 9 p.m.) is. I'd also like to give a special shout out to Chris Pratt (Bright) who continues to give a nuanced and heartfelt performance in a role that could have easily been one dimensional.

This is the "American Idol" (Tuesday, FOX, 8 p.m.) I know and love. We're down to the final 32 (do you have your favorites yet?) and we finally get to have a say in how the game progresses.

Michael J. Fox begins his guest-star stint on "Scrubs" (Tuesday, NBC, 9:20 p.m.).

My boys are back in town and once again absence has only made my heart grow fonder. "Line of Fire" was a fine show, but it's no "NYPD Blue" (Tuesday, ABC, 10 p.m.). My big question is, do we think Rita and the Lieutenant will begin an affair before the season is up? I'm thinking yes.

I have to tell you I always regret watching "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" (Tuesday, NBC, 10 p.m.). The crimes are simply way too disturbing. But if it doesn't bother you and you miss Dr. Quinn, you can check out Jane Seymour when she guest stars this week.

This week's most popular theory is that Lana's new friend Adam Knight is really Batman on "Smallville" (Wednesday, WB, 8 p.m.). The hypothesis goes like this -- the first TV Batman was played by Adam West, and Batman is known as the Dark Knight. Plus, he's super smart and knows karate. What do you think?

Wednesdays are back to being stressful when "The O.C" returns (Wednesday, FOX, 9 p.m.). I'll concede that the Oliver story line is way too over-the-top -- very "Melrose Place"-ish in its final seasons.

That's all for today. But remember you get two TV Gal columns during February sweeps. So I'll be back on Thursday with my thoughts on how "Friends" should end, "The Apprentice," "Sex and the City" (can Steve divorce Miranda and marry me?) and much, much more. Have a question, seen a familiar face, have an inside scoop or want to nominate a quote of the week? Write me at amytvgal@zap2it.com by clicking on my byline at the top of my column.
